Shipping a car from the UK to Mombasa, Kenya typically takes around 21–30 days at sea, depending on the vessel schedule and shipping route. Additional time may be required for vehicle collection, export procedures and customs clearance in Kenya, so we recommend allowing extra time when planning your shipment.

The documents required can vary depending on the vehicle and import circumstances, but commonly include the vehicle’s original logbook, commercial or purchase invoice, Bill of Lading, import documentation and the required inspection or conformity documents. Kenya Customs also requires supporting documentation for vehicle clearance. We can advise you on the documents needed for your shipment before the vehicle is exported.

Imported vehicles must meet Kenya’s applicable import and standards requirements. KRA states that vehicles must generally be less than 8 years old, must be right-hand drive, and are subject to roadworthiness inspection by a KEBS-appointed inspection agent in the country of export. Importers should also ensure the required customs and vehicle documentation is in place before shipping.

A non-running vehicle may require different handling from a standard RoRo shipment. Depending on the vehicle’s condition and the shipping arrangements available, container car shipping may be more suitable. Most of our car shipments to Kenya are transported to Mombasa Port, Kenya’s main seaport. From Mombasa, the vehicle can either be collected after customs clearance or arrangements can be made for onward transport, depending on your requirements.

Import duty and other taxes may apply when importing a vehicle into Kenya. The amount depends on the vehicle and the customs valuation and can include import duty, excise duty, VAT and applicable levies or fees.
