Our Car Shipping Options to Gabon
We understand that every vehicle and destination is unique. Car shipping to Gabon from the UK means transporting your vehicle by sea freight, either via RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) or inside a steel shipping container. Your car leaves from a UK port, crosses the Atlantic, and arrives at one of Gabon’s main commercial ports. That’s why we offer flexible shipping options for our customers shipping from the UK to Gabon.
RoRo Car Shipping to Gabon, Libreville
Roll-on/Roll-off shipping is the go-to option for most people sending a vehicle to Gabon from the UK and it’s easy to see why. Your vehicle is driven straight onto the vessel, secured in place, and charged only for the deck space it takes up. That keeps costs down without cutting corners on safety. We ship cars, 4x4s, vans, minibuses, buses, trucks, tractors, and agricultural machinery this way, covering both new and used vehicles. Whether you need a door-to-port or port-to-port service, we’ve got you covered.

Container Shipping to Gabon, Libreville
If you want your vehicle fully enclosed and protected throughout the journey, container shipping to Gabon is the better fit. We load and secure your car inside a 20ft or 40ft steel container before it leaves the UK, giving it full protection all the way to Libreville port. We handle all the loading and lashing at our warehouse, or we can deliver the container directly to your address if you’d prefer to load it yourself. Door-to-port and port-to-port options are both available.

RoRo vs Container Shipping to Gabon — Which Should You Choose?
This is the most common question we hear, and the answer is that it depends on your vehicle and budget. Both methods are reliable and we offer weekly sailings on both from multiple UK ports.
RoRo car shipping to Gabon is the most popular choice. It’s more affordable, faster to load, and perfectly safe for everyday cars, 4x4s, SUVs, vans, trucks, buses, and tractors. If you’re shipping a standard vehicle and keeping costs down, RoRo is usually the right call.
Container car shipping to Gabon makes more sense for high-value vehicles, electric or hybrid cars, classic cars, and non-runners. It’s a fully enclosed steel container, so the protection level is significantly higher. You can also include personal effects inside a container shipment, which RoRo doesn’t allow.
Gabon’s Ports — Where Does Your Car Arrive?
Gabon has three main ports that handle vehicle imports from the UK:
Port of Owendo: Gabon’s largest and busiest deep-water commercial port, located just south of Libreville. This is the primary arrival point for most RoRo and container vehicle shipments. The majority of cars shipped to Gabon from the UK come in through Owendo.
Port of Libreville: The capital city’s main port, handling both commercial cargo and passenger vessels. Closer to the city centre, which can be convenient for collection.
Port of Port Gentil: Located on the coast, mainly serving the oil industry and containerised cargo. It’s the second commercial port and handles a significant volume of imports.

Gabon Car Import Regulations
Getting the regulations right is where many people come unstuck. Here’s what Gabon currently requires based on rules in force right now.
Car Age Limit for Importing to Gabon
As of 26 January 2024, Gabon updated its vehicle import age restriction. Used vehicles up to 10 years old are now permitted for import, covering vehicle types A, B, C, D and E. This replaced the previous 3-year rule that caused significant confusion for many importers.
If your vehicle is no more than 10 years from its first registration date, it qualifies for import into Gabon.
What Is a BIETC Number — and Why Does It Matter?
The BIETC (Bordereau d’Identification Électronique de Traçabilité des Cargaisons) is a mandatory cargo tracking certificate required for every single shipment entering Gabon. Gabon Customs has enforced this requirement since 2010.
Without a valid BIETC, your vehicle will be detained at the port, resulting in significant fines and accumulating storage charges. This is non-negotiable for any car shipping to Gabon from the UK.
Crucially, as of 2024, the BIETC must be pre-validated before the vessel departs the UK. Post-departure validation is no longer accepted. The BIETC number must also appear on the Bill of Lading before loading. Ascope Shipping manages this entire process on your behalf as part of every booking.

Gabon Import Duty and Taxes
Importing a vehicle into Gabon comes with customs charges. The headline figure to know:
Total import tax is approximately 53.4% of the vehicle’s CIF value.
CIF means Cost + Insurance + Freight, so it’s calculated on the combined total of the car’s value, your shipping insurance, and the freight charges. Additional charges may apply depending on engine size, vehicle type, and whether the vehicle is classified as new or used. Gabon customs assess all vehicles individually on arrival.
Documents You Need to Ship a Car to Gabon from the UK
Have all of these ready before your sailing date. Missing paperwork causes delays and additional costs at Gabon customs.
- V5C Logbook (original) — must show your name as the registered keeper
- Purchase invoice — required for customs valuation
- Bill of Lading — issued by the shipping line, Ascope Shipping arranges this for you
- BIETC certificate — mandatory for all Gabon shipments, we obtain this on your behalf
- Roadworthiness certificate — your UK MOT certificate or approved equivalent
- Interpol control document — required for all used vehicle imports
- Commercial invoice — must include chassis number, engine size, model, and year
- Proof of identity — a passport copy for the importer on record
DVLA Notification
If you’re permanently exporting your vehicle from the UK, you must inform the DVLA. Complete the permanent export section of your V5C, detach it, and send it to the DVLA before your car sails. You’ll also be eligible for a vehicle excise duty (road tax) refund on any remaining months.
Shipping Insurance for Car Transport to Gabon
Your vehicle is an investment. Ascope Shipping strongly recommends marine cargo insurance for every vehicle we ship.
Our liability as a shipping agent is limited under standard trading conditions. Marine insurance gives you full, comprehensive cover from the moment your vehicle leaves the UK to the moment it arrives at the Gabon port, covering accidental damage, total loss, and unforeseen incidents during sea transit.
We can arrange competitive marine insurance as part of your booking. Just mention it when you request your quote.

How to Prepare Your Car Before Shipping to Gabon
A bit of preparation before your car reaches the port saves time, money, and avoidable stress.
Fuel: Reduce to no more than a quarter of a tank. This is a mandatory port safety requirement.
Personal items: Remove all personal belongings for RoRo shipments. Items left in vehicles are not covered by marine insurance.
Battery: Do not cover the battery compartment with any load. Port staff will disconnect the battery on arrival. Note: Some vehicles (e.g. certain Mercedes models) have boot-mounted batteries, making that area accessible.
Photograph your vehicle: Take dated photos of all four sides, the boot, interior, and odometer reading before drop-off. This protects you in any dispute on arrival.
Roadworthiness: Your vehicle should have a valid MOT or roadworthiness certificate.
Prohibited items: Fridges, mobile phones, solar panels, flammable liquids, and food items must not be loaded inside the vehicle.
